Posted: Updated:Every once in a while, amid the hoards of pink helium balloons and the girly hued guns, a campaign surfaces during Breast Cancer Awareness Month that nails what the October initiative is all about. The latest one comes courtesy of the Singapore-based Breast Cancer Foundation(BCF), which aims to put an end to the disease through its educational programs and publications. The organization also advocates for regular screenings and is urging women to check their breasts for suspicious lumps as often as they check Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Handheld ultrasound trounces physical exams for accuracy, cost Cardiologists who used a handheld ultrasound were more likely to make an accurate diagnosis of patients with common cardiovascular abnormalities than colleagues who relied on a physical exam, for an estimated savings of $63 per patient. Handheld ultrasound’s ability to rule out abnormalities also likely would reduce downstream testing, according to a study published online Sept. 17 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Imaging. Send a message to your representatives and senators and ask them to pass the Consistency, Accuracy, Responsibility and Excellence (CARE) in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy bill this year. The CARE bill, S. 642 and H.R. 1146, has retained bipartisan support in the House and Senate. It has industry-wide support, has been vetted by several hearings and has previously passed the Senate with unanimous consent. The Joint Commission is requesting comments from medical imaging professionals on three areas outlined in its revised diagnostic imaging requirements for hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory care organizations that provide diagnostic imaging services. The organization is seeking feedback about standards changes addressing the following areas:

The approach used in the study, which measures cerebrovascular reserve (CVR), could help solve the issue of managing asymptomatic patients. |
